Today I’m talking tanning. Quite surprisingly I have been embracing my golden self as of late!
Two or Three weeks ago I felt the
urge need to tan. Now this can only be described as a rare occurrence, however with the wonderful weather we were having and legs which could rival the palest Farrow and Ball shade on their colour chart it was time to take drastic action.
Instead of sporting white limbs I was keen to venture over to Victoria’s Secret territory. The last time any tanning product was mentioned right here on BBB was Tannymaxx’s Diamond Bronzing Lotion and that was nearly 18 months ago. So for me to dedicate a whole post to products which help get the glow, they must be pretty special.
The last time I was obsessed with tanning was way back in my clubbing days, where a tan was essential for a good night out. It seemed then you had to have a short skirt, high heels, the glossiest lips possible and a bronzed back to have the best time. Or at least to feel like a Goddess, even if we are talking about a night out in Peterborough.
For those hard to reach places I even had Mum or Dad slapping the tan on.
Enough waffle. To see how I am now incorporating these products into my beauty routine, keep on reading.
If you are as fair as me, you will know a great suncream is essential. Of course we all know you should apply protection daily, however this seems even more important than ever on a scorching day down the beach with a strong sea breeze.
Bioderma’s Photoderm Bronz 30 (High Protection)*
Bioderma’s suncream is a great all-rounder and claims to offer optimal protection against UV rays. The spray bottle is easy to use and the actual cream itself is quick and easy to rub into the skin. The scent, fresh and pleasant. The non-greasy quick absorbing formula is a welcome change to many sun-creams I have tried before. If you’re looking for fuss-free sun protection this Spring (weather dependant) and Summer, I couldn’t recommend this more.
Briefly touching on bronzer.
Estee Lauder bring out a beautiful compact year after year as part of their bronze Goddess Collection. Technically this is a handy eyeshadow/blush/highlighter combo but something I thought worth mentioning. For a quick flush of colour (as the weather warms up), a pretty but subtle highlight and a pop of colour on the eyes this is an easy to use and very pretty but somewhat glam palette to add to your collection. Each product is easy to apply to the skin and the lasting power is pretty good also. If you wish to get your hands on this, it’s still in stock on Feel Unique.
My favourite all-year bronzer is currently from Clarins.
As I write this, you can still get your very own compact from Debenhams. The prettiest suits-all bronzer in a massive compact with mirror (20g). Perfect to warm up the skin leaving a pretty sun-kissed glow, chisel the cheekbones or to apply the orange/coral tone for a pop of colour. The powder blends into the skin leaving an undetectable finish. It’s only when you remove this at the end of the day do you realise what a fantastic job this bronzer does and also how less radiant you look. Love it, love it, love it!
Moving on to the actual ‘fake tans’ of the bunch I am quite sure you are here to see the low-down on the products which really give you the Caribbean glow you can only dream of.
Rifling through my fake tan stash, the gradual tanners I had in my collection had seen better days and quite frankly were so old they needed to go. I needed something new, something different and which I hadn’t tried before. Cue Isle Of Paradise’s Happy Tan.
Happy Tan really is a glow in a nifty tube.
The packaging is cute and the clever marketing ploy of ‘Happy Tan‘ reeled me in quicker than the promise of queuing for a raspberry ripple cone. Happy Tan, just makes me smile before I’ve even applied it. This is a miracle worker with a non-biscuit scent, much more fresh. I’m getting cucumber vibes. Turns out it’s packed with Avocado (bloggers fave of course), chia seeds and coconut oils.
With colour correctors to even out skin tone, one application of this to my arms left a beautiful healthy glow. Not 2 weeks in Barbados, definitely 1 week on the Amalfi Coast. The tone is rich and golden with no hint of an Essex tan in sight. Easy to apply and blend into the skin, Happy Tan gives me everything I want from a tanner and more.
Non-streaky and fast absorbing, Isle Of Paradise’s Happy Tan makes you feel good. More confident. Even if you’re applying a ‘lazy tan’ and haven’t managed to exfoliate 24 hours before (as recommended) it still looks good. You really don’t have to try to hard with this, it’s idiot proof!
I’m yet to apply a second coat (sound like I’m paint rolling right?), however I’m so impressed with one layer that this is a product I will be using all Summer long.
Free from parabens, sulfates, mineral oils and phthalates this is one cracker you need to try! Sooooo good, this does EXACTLY what it says on the tin; it gives you a Happy Tan!
Note to self: must try IOP’s Face Drops next.
L’Oreal’s Sublime Bronze Overnight Elixir.
Sublime Bronze is your all in one ‘handy-while-you-sleep’ tanner. Although once I started to realise I was getting back into tanning I was too impatient to wait.
I applied in the morning, tidied the house, blogged and left on for the entire day. In the afternoon I headed to Tesco for supplies (whilst wearing shorts – again something which hasn’t happened in a long time) and then I washed off after tea.
This product is easy to apply and the dark colour makes it easy to see where it’s been applied. It blends beautifully and dries quickly. Designed to be used overnight and offer hydration it still felt somewhat nourishing on the skin even though I was busy all day and certainly not resting.
Once washed off the colour was comparable to Happy Tan. No shock to society of pale to dark. The shade was beautiful, slightly darker than Happy Tan (although no surprise considering that is a gradual tanner), glowy and my legs actually looked brown. Not white, not orange, they looked tanned and I could pass for just landing from vacation.
The tan itself lasted around 5 days and faded evenly. I cannot wait for a full on tanning session with proper exfoliation. Not slap dash and hope for the best. I mean, Sublime Bronze if you looked that good on the maiden run, then I’m sure you will look even better once I have perfected the prep and application!
After writing this post, I feel I have missed out on years of short wearing and bare legs. Normally my legs are lily white in the summer and even on hot days I will wear jeans and a tee or a maxi skirt to hide them.
Not anymore. I have discovered some really great tanning products which are easy to use and make me confident and happy. Of course a tan isn’t everything but when you use products which make you feel great and sassy and you can get back to the short wearing, well then life’s made. And you’re less hot.
I would love to know any tanning recommendations you have. Is there something you have tried lately which I need to know about? Likewise anything I need to avoid? And have you used any of these products I have mentioned today?
