YSL cardholder? Flight to Barcelona? Armani lipstick? Ticket to the Empire State Building? Elemis massage with cream tea in a swanky spa? A night in a hotel in Florence?
Which of these would you rather have? Items or memories….
Last Sunday I surprised my pal with a plane ticket to Barcelona.
It was her 30th and we’ve had numerous chats about travelling more after our antics to NYC. Her partner is a real-homebody and would rather be at home with his slippers on catching up with a good movie than exploring continental beaches and cafes.
My other half loves travelling and exploring new places, both home and away. We are planning trips next year, although he is quite happy to let me have my girl moments abroad. He stays home looking after the cats, drinking beer and tending to his garden and veg trug.
Keen to improve on our European knowledge, Brigita and I are planning weekend city breaks, so I thought a quick hop over to Bar-Ce-Lona would kick start our conquest off a treat.
With all this in mind, for her birthday, I carefully wrapped a guide book, and travel brochure in world map paper. Handmade a flight ticket. We are planning to fly next Spring.
We met at a halfway point and had a glorious couple of hours chatting travel plans over tea and cake. Something we frequently seem to do albeit not often enough.
And then it hit me. I mean it didn’t really hit me right then but I had been thinking for a long time. It came down to one thing really.
Make Memories. Material possessions aren’t necessary. Memories last a lifetime.
Now, if I had an endless cash flow, I’m not saying I wouldn’t buy anything luxury or splurge on an overpriced handbag or silk scarf. I’m partial to luxury, lovely things but right now I would rather catch a flight to an unknown destination. To dream, discover and of course document.
I will always treat myself to luxury skincare and lovely makeup because I do love using products which really make a difference to my skin and make me feel a little fancy using them, although at the moment I do seem to use a mixture of high street and high end. If it works it’s got my name written on it.
Purchases are now more thought out, than just buying on a whim and regretting at a later date. And even now I think to myself ‘Chanel bronzer or put that £40 towards a flight?’
As well as trips abroad, weekends away and tickets to events, personally I think you cannot beat a catch-up in a local coffee shop with your best mate, day trip to London with your Mum or a Sunday stroll in the country with your partner.
So you see, when you don’t have an endless bank account, you can still make memories, put money towards things you really love and enjoy. Since buying less and using more I find having less in my home leaves my mind clear and uncluttered.
The next time you think of buying that fancy lipstick. Just think would I rather buy a ticket to see the Colosseum in Rome?
It really makes you think. I would rather have tonnes of photos of places I have been to and things I have done than a pile of receipts for items I have bought and no longer own.
Are you more into making memories and living and enjoying life? Or are you happy to stay home and have luxury goods? Or are you living your best life already with designer labels and plane trips abroad? As always please do drop a comment below, I would love to know your take on things…
NB: On a side note this beautiful cat Burt featured right here on my blog nearly 4 years ago! He can be found loving life and I’m quite sure making his own memories deep in Norfolk!
