Self-care comes in many forms. Booking a massage, being kind to yourself or indulging in a book.
With Summer fast approaching here are 7 ways for you to look after yourself. Just think of it as a reset.
1. Book A Chiropodist Appointment
The weather is starting to sizzle. There will be no need for thick socks. Sandals will make an appearance after gathering dust in the wardrobe for the last few months. It’s time to get those feet in tip-top condition and sandal ready. I have found heading to the chiropodist twice a year gives my feet a real refresh, where skin and nails are buffed to an inch of their life. An appointment is around £45. This is no relaxing pedicure, but a real hardcore treatment for the feet. Personally I feel this is much better value for money. Let the professional’s do the MOT on your feet and you can easily swipe a little polish on once home.
2. Be Up-To Date With Your Oral Hygiene
I don’t know anyone who is a fan of the dentist. I for one haven’t been for a while now. We all want the whitest smile possible (to rival the whitest shade on the Farrow and Ball paint chart), so to keep your pearly whites healthy, a 6 month check-up would be preferable, yearly better than nothing.
Note: Diary at the ready. Phone call to be made.
3. Hair Maintenance
A weekly hair mask or treatment is on the cards. With all this warmer weather my dry locks need something a little more intense. Always on the hunt for something hydrating and smoothing, Organic APH’s (Always Perfect Hair) Olive Oil Hair Mayonnaise* came along at just the right time.
Ideal for dry and damaged hair, the mayonnaise consistency of this product is luckily the only resemblance to the great salad sauce of the same name. It’s super hydrating, smells of olive oil and free from SLS’s, parabens and synthetic oils.
A quick dollop applied twice a week seems to work a treat. I leave this on for the recommended 15-20 minutes and once rinsed away, feel more like a Pantene hair model than a bedraggled scarecrow, namely Worzel Gummidge!
I have also been taking OUAI’s thinning hair supplement (a 30 day supply). My hair is already thick and I am keen to keep it that way. They now also sell a supplement tailor-made for dry hair. That is next on my list of to-tries.
The Ordinary have also released their Multi Peptide Hair Serum for Density (to support hair health for thicker, denser, fuller hair). I have been rubbing a few drops into the scalp at bedtime as recommended for the last few days. I will be sure to update you on the progress over the next few weeks.
4. Plan Life
It’s time to grab a notebook and make lists. If there’s something you wish to improve on or achieve, commit to your goal and do it. I could really make use of taking my own advice. If you’re stuck in that big ole rut and want to become the very best version of you, then don’t compare yourself to others. Sure, take inspiration from a way of life or a person’s attitude. Write down attributes you feel are important and how your ideal life would be. What would the best version of yourself be like? Create that best version of yourself and go for it.
I have had a new notebook at the ready for the last couple of weeks and as I finally put this blog post together, I am certainly going to take heed of my own advice and work towards a few goals. No dramatic life changes, just a few tweaks here and there.
5. Have Something To Look Forward To
At the time of writing, I am scouring the internet and trawling endless travel websites to find the perfect holiday. In less than 3 weeks I have a big birthday. I dread heading into the next decade and on occasions still get asked for I.D. when buying that bottle of Merlot at 5pm on a Friday night. I appreciate the local Tesco’s feel I still look young and fresh-faced (it must be all the skincare I have invested in over the years).
Anyway getting to the point, while we are
sipping slurping our Friday night tipple, I am excited already at the thought of booking this holiday. Tony and I have booked 2 weeks off work at the end of September. There will be enough time to get beach ready and enough time to book exactly the right place.
This year we were all about booking a chilled out beach holiday. Somewhere we can rent a car and explore but have reading days in the sun and a massage or two. For my big birthday I am planning a trip to California next year – I’m very sure this will involve 3 weeks of being on the go trying to cram everything in, not a relaxing beach retreat. I have guide books, maps and a tonne of holiday blog posts earmarked for my future plans.
So whether you have a trip to the cinema with your best mate, a date at the local Italian or you’re planning the dreamiest of trips away, have at least a couple of soirees to look forward to! Then there’s always something to plan for, even if it’s what shoes you will match to your shiny, new bag.

6. Discover New Skin Care
More than ever I’m trying to up my skincare game. As you all know I am a real sucker for new face masks, mists and all types of lotions and potions. I have been trying out a few new products lately.
Here are my first impressions…
Payot Blue Techni Liss Week-End Chrono-Renewing Peel Mask*
I love a sheet Mask and had heard of Payot before but had never manged to get around to trying anything. This weekend mask is ‘bio-cellulose peeling’ and has been designed to protect the skin from harmful blue lights (just what we all need). I was lucky enough to be sent a couple of sheet masks to try and so far so good.
The mask itself leaves skin feeling soft and smooth (as it refines texture) and looking glowy and radiant. Techni Liss Week End was easy to use and something I would definitely buy myself again. Made for those on the go and the jet-setters among us, this is one mask perfect for any situation.
Payot Techni Regard Anti-Wrinkle Smoothing Eye Care*
Over the years I have struggled to find an eye-cream which really hydrates without making my eyes stream. Sensitive is not the word!
So far, Payot’s eye cream has left my under-eye skin looking more hydrated, less puffy and the skin does appear smoother. If you too suffer with sensitive eyes but are looking for something hydrating and smoothing, then this could be it! Impressed with this brand so far, I have linked a few other products I am now keen to try!
Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup Melting Butter Cleanser
It’s Drunk Elephant, need I say more. I’m already a huge, huge fan! A hydrating balm cleanser. Everything on the skin melts away quickly and with no real effort. A kind-to-the-skin product which really, really works. Another exciting launch from D.E.
BBB London’s Rosewater Mist*
A dupe for Chantecaille’s extravagant Rose Water? I have been using this daily before moisturiser. It smells heavenly, is the finest mist you could imagine and skin feels smooth and soft.
Perfect to use to refresh and soothe skin after a warm day in the sun. BBB London’s Mist has become a firm staple in my every day routine. It’s just lovely.
Dr Jart Ceramidin
It’s early days, but I think I have found a new favourite moisturiser from Korean brand Dr Jart.
Ceramidin is lightweight, ultra hydrating and calms my skin down a treat. Paired with the Rosewater Mist from BBB London this is a winning combination. For the days my skin is a little rosier than normal, Dr J’s Tiger Grass Cream is the perfect accompaniment to Ceramidin, to leave skin feeling and looking it’s best without base or concealer.
7. Book Those Essential Appointments
I’m talking the big S Test. Enough said. We all know how important it is. Look after yourself and your bits. Don’t be shy, we all have them and it may just save your life.
Get those eyes tested. Need a stronger prescription? Then it’s time for an upgrade. Invest in glasses to keep your peepers happy. If you have to forgo a few trips to your local coffee shop and Primark, then so be it.
We all know you only get one sight, you can get Primark goodies any day of the week.
So there you have it, 7 easy ways in which we can look after certain areas of our health. Think of it as a starting point to soothe the soul and give your body a Spring MOT.
