What candies can dogs eat?

As a rule, it's not recommended to give candies to dogs, as most candies contain sugar and other ingredients that can be harmful to them.

However, there are some candies that are safe for dogs in small amounts. These include:

Natural Peanut Butter: Plain, unsalted, and unsweetened peanut butter can be a healthy treat for dogs, as it's high in protein and healthy fats. Bean, my Cavapoo, loves a bit of peanut butter.

Honey: Small amounts of honey can be added to dog treats or used as a sweetener for homemade dog food.

Coconut: Unsweetened coconut flakes or coconut oil can be used in dog treats or added to their food for a healthy boost of nutrients.

It's important to note that even these safe options should be given to dogs in moderation, as too much of any new food can cause stomach upset or other health problems. If you're unsure about whether a particular food is safe for your dog, it's always best to consult with your vet.

Is it ok if my dog eats candy?

It's not recommended for dogs to eat candy, as most candies are high in sugar and other ingredients that can be harmful to their health. While small amounts of certain candies may not cause any serious harm, consuming large amounts of candy can lead to a variety of health problems for dogs.

Eating candy can cause digestive upset, including vomiting and diarrhoea, which can be particularly dangerous for small dogs or those with pre-existing health conditions. Additionally, some candies may contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can be toxic to dogs and cause a rapid insulin release, leading to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), seizures, and even liver failure.

If you suspect that your dog has consumed candy, especially if it contains xylitol, it's important to contact your vet right away. They may recommend monitoring your dog's symptoms, inducing vomiting, or providing supportive care to help manage any potential health problems.

It's best to stick to dog-friendly treats and avoid giving your dog candy altogether. If you're looking for a special treat to give your furry friend, there are plenty of safe and healthy options available, such as carrots, green beans, or plain cooked meat. Can dogs eat gummy bears?

No, dogs should not eat gummy bears or any type of candy. Gummy bears are high in sugar and artificial ingredients that can be harmful to your dog. Eating too much sugar can cause obesity, dental problems, and diabetes in dogs.

Additionally, gummy bears and other candies can be a choking hazard for dogs, particularly small breeds or those who like to swallow things whole.

Some gummy bears may also contain an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs even in small amounts.

It's best to stick to dog-friendly treats and avoid giving your dog candy altogether.

A great thing for a dog to have, and one of the best things I've bought for Bean is a lick mat. Read "What to put on a lick mat?"

Can dogs eat marshmallows?

While marshmallows aren’t toxic to dogs, they are not a recommended treat due to their high sugar content and the risk of choking. Marshmallows are essentially pure sugar, which can lead to obesity, dental problems, and other health issues in dogs if consumed in excess.

Also, if a dog swallows a large piece of marshmallow, it can become lodged in their throat or gastrointestinal tract, causing blockages or other health problems.

If you want to give your dog a special treat, there are plenty of safer options available, such as small pieces of plain cooked meat, carrots, or green beans. Always remember to offer treats in moderation and consult with your vet if you have any questions or concerns about your dog's diet or health.

Can dogs have popcorn?

In moderation, popcorn can be a safe and healthy snack for dogs. However, it's important to keep in mind that plain, air-popped popcorn is the only type of popcorn that is safe for dogs to eat. Avoid giving your dog popcorn that has been flavoured with butter, salt, or other seasonings, as these can be harmful to their health.

Popcorn can be a good source of fibre and can help clean your dog's teeth, promoting dental health.

Always supervise your dog while they're eating popcorn and offer it in small, bite-sized pieces to reduce the risk of choking.

If you have any concerns about giving popcorn to your dog, or if your dog has any underlying health conditions, it's best to consult with your vet before offering any new foods or treats.

Wrapping up

To sum up, there are not many candies that dogs can safely eat without risking some serious tummy troubles, a sugar high, or even worse, a trip to the vet's office.

But don't worry, just because your furry friend can't indulge in a Snickers bar or a pack of Skittles doesn't mean they can't have a sweet treat now and then.

Why not whip up a batch of homemade dog treats instead? You can make them with ingredients that are safe and healthy for your pup, and they'll love you for it. Plus, you'll get the satisfaction of knowing that you're giving your dog a treat that is not only delicious but also good for them.

So, next time you're tempted to sneak your dog a candy bar, remember that there are plenty of other tasty options out there that your pup will love just as much.
